The skin is the largest organ of the human body and exerts several functions of paramount importance. |

| The hair follicle as the “skin’s brain” Hair provides no vital function for humans, but its psychological effect is almost immeasurable, which accounts for the very special care it receives from both men and women. Hair follicles vary considerably in size and shape, depending on their location, but all have the same basic structure. Indeed, the architecture and biology is complex and to some extent, still far from being elucidated. Fascinatingly, the hair follicle has an almost unique regeneration capacity in mammals, through a perpetual cycle that can be divided into three key stages: growth (anagen), involution (catagen), and rest (telogen). Those who approach the world of skin soon become aware of how important the hair follicle is in controlling both skin metabolism and functions. Indeed, some of the most important growth processes of skin tissue, such as tissue repair, angiogenesis and immunological defence, are regulated by the hair follicle which, for its role in dictating the behaviour of the skin, can easily be referred as the “skin’s brain”. |
